Piano removalists Melbourne

Specialist piano movers, not general removalists

A piano is the heaviest, most delicate and often most treasured thing in a home. For more than 15 years Victorian Piano Transport has moved nothing but pianos and keyboard instruments, which means every crew member knows how a grand comes apart, how an upright behaves on stairs and how a pianola’s mechanism needs to be secured.

We work with skid boards, piano trolleys, ramps and thick padded blankets so the weight is carried by equipment rather than backs. That is safer for your piano, your floors and walls, and our team.

Melbourne’s piano retailers, tuners and restoration workshops trust us with new and pre-owned instruments every week. Whether you are moving house, renovating, buying a second-hand piano or sending one to a restorer, you get the same care.

Real jobs, real staircases

Piano movers Melbourne trusts, one staircase at a time

Most piano moves aren’t hard because of the piano. They’re hard because of the house. A tight turn at the top of the stairs, a lift that’s only just big enough, a front path that turns out to be a slope. After more than 15 years in piano transport across Melbourne and regional Victoria, that’s where our attention goes first.

Plenty of removalists will put a piano on a truck. Specialist piano removalists plan around the building, the instrument and the people who love it. Gabriel leads most of our moves, and his name comes up in more than half of our Google reviews. He’s usually the one who answers your enquiry, asks the slightly fussy questions about steps and doorways, and is there on the day with the crew.

Piano retailers, tuners and restorers trust us with their instruments too. Below are six real jobs, retold from what our customers wrote on Google.

  1. No. 01

Level one apartment · Upright piano

The day the lift got stuck

Getting an upright up to level one should have been simple. Then the lift got stuck. The crew stayed calm, kept at it and got the piano safely into the apartment. The customer called them heroes. We’ll take that.

  2. No. 02

Geelong to Ballarat · Upright piano

    The 25 steps nobody mentioned

The new place was meant to be flat. On arrival there were 25 steps at the drop off. Gabriel took them in his stride for a small extra fee and the piano went in without any fuss. It’s exactly why we ask about access when we quote, and why we’re ready when the answer changes.

  3. No. 03

    Music school · Three pianos

    Three pianos, one crane

A music school moving premises needed three pianos up on the first floor of its new building. We moved all three and used a crane to lift them safely into place. The school’s verdict: above and beyond, and very fair prices.

  4. No. 04

Two Steinways · Steps at both ends

    A pair of Steinways

Two Steinways leaving a rental for a freshly renovated home, with steps at both addresses. Gabriel and Zak handled both instruments with the kind of care you want around pianos like that. The owner did her research first and says she has no regrets.

  5. No. 05

Camberwell to the Grampians · Long distance

    From Camberwell to Wartook

From a Camberwell home to Wartook, on the edge of the Grampians. Gabriel organised the whole move and the piano arrived, in the owner’s words, safe and sound. Country runs like this are a big part of what we do, with customers’ pianos also heading to Ballarat, Geelong and Horsham.

  6. No. 06

Heavy German piano · Second attempt

The piano another mover struggled with

An extremely heavy German piano that a previous mover had struggled with. Gabriel moved it with care and ease, and the owner couldn’t believe how calm and seamless the whole thing was. Heavy older pianos are where the right equipment and experience matter most.

Just had my dad's precious baby grand piano relocated and the guys did an amazing job. So easy to deal with and highly skilled and professional. We have a large number of steps at our property and they negotiated them with ease and care!!

Robyn K.Google review · Aug 2026

We are incredibly grateful to the team today. Moving an upright piano is no small task, and despite getting stuck in the lift at one point, they remained calm, professional, and absolutely determined to get the job done. They truly worked like heroes to bring our piano safely up to level one! Their strength, persistence, and positive attitude made a stressful situation so much easier for us. Highly recommend — thank you again for your amazing effort!

Louis L.Google review · Mar 2026

I called these guys at 7pm on a Friday evening with an urgent request to move an old upright piano that would have been trashed otherwise. They were able to sort things out for me very quickly and the piano was moved efficiently a few days later. Competitive rate too. Very happy!

TC B.Google review · Feb 2026

Gabriel did an excellent job moving a piano that we had bought. From organising the job to being prompt on the day through to the utmost care in moving the piano. Hopefully we won’t have to move a piano again for a while but I wouldn’t hesitate to give him a call if I had to!

Patrick C.Google review · 2025

These guys did an amazing job of moving our piano in, when all the other movers said it couldn't be done! Well worth the money. They wheeled the piano down a laneway, up a 1m high concrete step and up a steep grassy slope to get it in and no damage to piano at all. Very impressed.

Clare B.Google review · 2025

Gabriel came and moved my Piano from Geelong to Ballarat. 25 steps at the drop off and I had not seen the place and thought it was flat, Gabriel did it no fuss and only for a small extra fee. Life saver and a great bloke

Andrew F.Google review · 2025

Gabriel and his team were friendly, professional, punctual and did an outstanding job. They moved my upright piano into my new apartment up on the second floor. It was a tight and difficult stairwell and they completed the job perfectly. I highly recommend Gabriel and the team at Victorian Piano Transport!

RobbieGoogle review · 2024

These guys are brilliant. Gabriel moved my (extremely heavy) German piano with care and ease. The previous movers I used before struggled with this piano – I couldn’t believe how calm, efficient and seamless the whole experience was with Victorian Piano Transport. Gabriel’s an absolute pro and I will definitely be calling him for any future piano moves! Thanks again Gabriel and team.

Christina H.Google review · 2024

Gabriel and his team at Victorian Piano Transport are amazing. They went above and beyond to move three of our pianos to our music school. They transported the pianos to our new location and used a crane to safely get the pianos to the first floor of our building. Very fair prices as well. Would definitely recommend.

Dayne K.Google review · 2024

Gabriel and Zak were absolutely wonderful, polite and intelligent. Very careful, caring about my 2 Steinways to be moved from rental property to our renovated house with steps in both places. The price was very good. The service was excellent. I would highly recommend this company. If you are looking for a piano move-this is the one to go with. I did my search before I have chosen this one, no regret. Many thanks again, Gabriel

How it works

Our piano moving process

  1. Quote and access check

Tell us the piano, both addresses and any stairs. We confirm a fixed price and the right crew size.

  2. Protect the room

Floors and door frames are covered before the piano moves an inch.

  3. Wrap and secure

Lids locked, legs and pedals removed where needed, the case padded and strapped to a skid board.

  4. Careful transport

Loaded by ramp or tail lift and tied down upright in our padded vehicle.

  5. Placement

Carried in, reassembled and set exactly where you want it, level and steady.

  6. Final check

We check keys, pedals and casters with you, and can arrange a tuner once it settles.

The Victorian Piano Transport difference

Quality you can see in the details

Most piano damage happens in small moments: a leg caught on a door frame, a piano rolled on its own casters, a strap that was never tightened. We remove those moments with a routine that never changes, whatever the size of the job.

  • Lids, fallboards and pedals secured before the piano is lifted
  • Grands dismantled and moved on a padded skid board
  • Every piano strapped upright in the truck, with nothing stacked against it
  • Reassembled, levelled and checked with you before we leave

Questions

Piano moving FAQs

How do you make sure my piano is not damaged?

We use specialist equipment, skid boards, piano trolleys, ramps and padded blankets, and a set routine for securing every part of the instrument. We are also fully licensed and insured.

Can you move a piano through a narrow staircase?

In most cases, yes. We assess the stairs, landings and turns when you book and bring the right trolley and crew size.

Do you offer tuning after the move?

We work closely with trusted Melbourne tuners and technicians and can arrange a tuning once your piano has settled, usually after two to three weeks.

What areas do you cover?

All of metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria, including Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, the Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland.

How much does it cost to move a piano in Melbourne?

It depends on the piano, the stairs, the access and the distance. Our piano moving cost guide explains each factor, or send us the details for an exact quote.
